Who won the major prizes?
Green Book bagged the prize in the Best Picture category with Rami Malek and Olivia Colman taking away the major acting prizes.
What were the nominations?
The nominations for the Academy Awards 2019 were announced on 22nd January 2019 and largely followed the trend of the last Academy Awards. The Favourite and Roma led the nominations with 10 nominations being included in each major category. These two movies competed with Green Book, A Star is Born, Blackkklansman, Vice, Bohemian Rhapsody and Black Panther in the Best Picture category.
Lady Gaga was nominated for A Star is Born along with Olivia Coleman for The Favourite in the Acting category. Other nominations for the same category are Glenn close for the Wife, Melissa McCarthy for Can You Ever Forgive Me. Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe, Viggo Mortensen and Rami Malek were also nominated for the acting category.
In the supporting actor category, Amy Adams, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, Marina De Tavira and Regina king were nominated. The supporting actor category included Mahershala Ali, Richard E Grant, Adam Driver, Sam Rockwell and Sam Elliott.
The Best Original Song category included Shallow, The Place Where Lost Things Go, All the Stars, When a Cowboy Trades his Spurs for Wings, and I’ll Fight. A notable absence of the women directors was witnessed in the nomination list for the Best director. The nominations included Alfonso Cuaron for Roma, Adam McKay for Vice, Spike Lee for Blackkklansman, Yorgos Lanthimos for The Favourite and Pawl Pawlikowski for Cold War.
Who hosted the show?
Kevin Hart declined the hosting position, three days after it was announced that he would be fronting the ceremony. He had tweeted claiming that he had turned down the offer from the very beginning because he did not want to be a distraction in a night which was meant for celebrating the amazing and talented people of the industry. Oscar 2019 went without a host and deeply relied on the presenters. The list of presenters was star studded including Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Lopez, Daniel Craig, Brie Larson, Charlize Theron, Awkwafina, Constance Wu, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Chris Evans, Amandla Stenberg and Tessa Thompson.
As a part of the tradition, all the nominees of the Best Original Song category performed that the award show. Kendrick Lamar and SZA were the only exceptions. An important highlight of the show was the emotional rendition of Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga of A Star is Born’s Shallow.
Who was expected to win?
Even though the critics favoured Roma and the Favourite, the Green Book bagged the prize. Rami Malek took home the prize in the acting category though he received stiff competition from Christian Bale. Olivia Coleman received the award in the supporting category and ended up giving the best speech of the night. The only predictable win was in the director’s and cinematography category with everyone expecting Alfonso Cuaron to bag the prize.
